As Ava began her internship search as a Neuroscience major, she was unsure what to expect. Finding local internships that would align with her major was a considerable feat. Though now, three years later, Ava couldn’t be more sure of her decision.

“Back-end meticulous work can sometimes seem like it has no impact, so it’s nice to know I’m doing good in the world.”

The summer of her Freshman year, Ava was introduced to BCArc after networking through a family friend. Ava loved BCArc’s mission and the idea of giving back to the community, though she was a bit hesitant at first because talking to new people wasn’t something that came naturally.

Ava said, “I’ve always felt more comfortable behind the scenes.”

As a private care provider at BCArc, Ava has now found the ideal balance. She is able to work both summer and winter breaks. Analyzing updated nursing regulations to planning interactive art activities, scanning fiscal files, and soliciting local businesses ahead of upcoming fundraisers, Ava takes on a variety of seasonal tasks that are meaningful to both Ava and BCArc. This program has given her the chance to socialize in moderation, all while making an impact and still largely remaining behind the scenes.

“Ava single-handedly visited more than thirty local businesses all over the Berkshires and successfully secured gift certificates for our biggest raffle fundraiser of the year,” said Dave Singer. BCArc’s VP of Communications and Marketing

Now, being with BCArc for three years, Ava claims she feels her understanding of professional work environments has expanded, and now she will go into post-grad knowing her strengths, passions, and ideal task balance.

Her advice to those considering interning at BCArc?

“For fellow STEM majors, it’s important to know that all sorts of skill sets are needed at an organization like BCArc. You can still benefit the community, even if your talents are not people-oriented.”
