Chance only began working for BCArc in November but can already see a long career in human services ahead of him.

This is his first job working with individuals with disabilities, having previously worked in restaurants and as an eye doctor technician. He was inspired to apply at BCArc due to his own experiences with his uncle who has a brain injury. Now working in a  Pittsfield home serving individuals with brain injuries, he can use this personal experience to better serve the individuals in the home.

When first starting the job, Chance was nervous about helping the individuals with tasks such as showering and using the bathroom, but quickly adjusted and overcame this. Over the past few months, he has become close with the men who live in the house and feels much more comfortable with them.

“Some of these guys don’t have any family, so we are their family,” he said. “My favorite part of the job is getting to know everyone’s personalities and connect with them.”

A day in Chance’s life consists of doing various tasks around the house including assisting with showers, doing laundry, preparing meals, cleaning, and spending time with the individuals.

“Some of these guys don’t have any family, so we are their family.”

“I love how happy the guys are to see me when I come in, especially if I haven’t seen them for longer than usual.”

Chance spends most of his time working, often picking up additional shifts at another BCArc home. When he is off the clock, his favorite thing to do is spend time with his younger sister.

He moved to the Berkshires from the Bronx in 2014, and is enjoying living here for now, but would someday like to move somewhere warmer. In the future, he plans to go back to school and further his education, having already studied medical assisting at Mildred Elley.
