Ask Cody about working with people with disabilities, and he says: “It’s a blast. I enjoy this place every minute of every day.”
It started when he broke his ankle during the Wahconah High football season in 10th grade. To accommodate him, they sent him to the Special Education classroom. “My chair didn’t fit in a regular desk. Suddenly I met these students who all had a disability, all different, and I liked them all and they liked me. I started visiting after my injury. By senior year the school created a role for me, even gave me a stipend.”
“Also, everyone is kind here. I want to help as many people as I can, and it feels like everyone here has that same attitude.”
Cody chose to work at a Day Habilitation program over a home setting. “I am best when I’m moving, when I can go-go-go,” he said. “And that’s what I get to do here. Also, everyone is kind here. I want to help as many people as I can, and it feels like everyone here has that same attitude.”
“Even if I didn’t’ break my leg, I think I would have found my way to this work. I feel like I have a special ability to connect with people with disabilities, and they seem to like me too.”
Before joining BCArc only three months ago, he worked a summer at Camp Russell, helping young campers stay active through their day.”
“I was doing this in high school because I loved being involved, I can’t believe I’m doing this for pay now.”
