As a relief staff worker, Marissa Messana-Banks cut the hair of a few individuals while on her shift, at no cost.

“I’m a professional hairdresser. I like cutting people’s hair, it helps them feel good about themselves, so that was my approach with the individuals,” she explained.

When COVID hit, word spread quickly through the BCArc programs that Marissa cuts your hair at your house.

“I was getting calls from a lot of houses. At one point I was cutting everyone’s hair at 15 different houses,” she said, laughing. It was at this time she stopped doing it as part of her BCArc work, and came in as a hairdresser, not a relief worker.

“I don’t really make house calls. I work at Salon Experience in Pittsfield. For the individuals I’ll make house calls. I charge them a special price and tell them they can’t tip me. They’re still calling me back.”

Along with hairdressing, and relief work at BCArc, Marissa works as a CNA at Berkshire Medical Center. Her father, Dennis, heads up BCArc’s maintenance department as Maintenance Supervisor.

“My dad kept saying, you should try working at BCArc, you’ll like it. I tried it, I loved it, and here I am.”
