Katherine, showing the kind of printed dress she prefers. While she loves clothes, she is careful not to spend too much of her paycheck at the store where she works.

When Katherine isn’t drawing, or reading, or taking art classes, or caring for her cat, or riding on the back of dad’s motorcycle, she can be found working at Walmart making her clothing section the neatest in the store.

“My supervisor likes to say to me that she wishes everyone kept their section as nice as I do,” Katherine said, laughing. “My room is a different story. I love to read, so I have a lot of books.” Her book collection is as wide-ranging as any library – romance novels, murder mysteries, Western books, history, literature, poetry.

Then there is her art.  She draws or paints landscapes, still-life images like flowers, or other topics like the planets of Saturn and Earth.

Katherine painted this for her parent’s 30th Anniversary last year, saying: “Because we couldn’t go to Maine to celebrate, I brought a little something of Maine to us.”

She exercises her passion for fashion at Walmart, her employer where she saves a good part of her paycheck, but admits that she also spends some of her check on the clothes she works with.

“I like a lot of different styles,” she said of her clothes. “I want it to be fun, but not wild, I’m more modest than anything.” This differs from her art, when she leans bright and colorful. She has been painting and drawing since elementary school, starting advancing her interests and skills during middle and high school, and today participates in classes with Community Access to the Arts (CATA).

She is described as considerate and caring. “I love to help, I always try to be helpful in every situation,” she said.

As part of BCArc’s Adult Family Care program, Katherine participates in a variety of BCArc activities. “This is where I see my friends,” she said, noting that she goes to many of the events, in person and online. In fact, with her zeal for staying productive and busy, she barely misses any BCArc event. Over the past year she participated in online plays, book readings, trivia contests, sing-a-longs, and more. She even sent a suggested song-list each week for the sing-a-long moderator.

Katherine looks forward to improving and growing through all of her pursuits.
