When asked why she likes working with individuals with brain injuries, Nyasia said, “I like helping them to see that they’re still the same person that they were before their accident.”

Nyasia works full-time at BCArc giving direct care to individuals in a home in Westfield. She applied after being encouraged by some friends who already work for the agency, and now is able to do a job she loves and work alongside friends.

“Everything runs smoothly here, we’re all on the same page,” Nyasia said about the home she works in. “I feel more appreciated at BCArc than at my last job. Whenever I need something, it immediately gets done. I’m never waiting around for help or answers.”

I like helping them to see that they’re still the same person that they were before their accident.”

Nyasia helps individuals with all aspects of daily living. She works first shift, so she drives individuals to and from their day programs, as well as tasks in the home such a cleaning and cooking. She brings individuals with a high level of independence on outings such as going out to eat. She takes one individual to get his hair cut, and enjoy seeing the confidence boost that it gives him.

“Getting his hair cut makes him feel good about himself as a man,” she said. “I like being a part of that moment.”

Treating individuals like regular people and not making them feel lesser because of their brain injury is a big priority for Nyasia. During her time at BCArc, she has learned how each individual has different needs and how to properly redirect them during moments where they are upset.

“You have to compromise with them.”

Nyasia has only been at BCArc for four months, but already has goals to keep advancing in the agency, with her sights set on being a site manager eventually. Outside of work, she loves to spend time with friends, go out to dinner, and go to the beach.
