After 28 years as a Stop & Shop manager, Patty has found her place at BCArc.
“As soon as I walked in the door, the fit was right.”
“Everyday you go to work there is always something to highlight,” Patty shares. Whether it is the teamwork of the staff to handle an issue or a learning lesson for individuals, “You can never have a bad day.”
Before her career in human services, Patty succeeded as a Stop & Shop manager for twenty-eight years. There, she led the store while fostering community and business operations. When Patty started thinking about a transition to a new career, she realized the element she enjoyed most about her work.
“I have a passion for helping people,” she said, describing the fulfillment she has found in supporting BCArc’s individuals. “I feel my superpower is being able to form that bond to understand how to help.”
Patty first started with BCArc pre-Covid, at the organization’s newer Evening Program which provides community outings and hands-on activities. Later, she worked full time in a Community Based Day Program supporting young adults in gaining independence and employment skills. Patty appreciated this position as the staff had the opportunity to “share ideas and make changes.” With this, Patty implemented a recycling program. Overall, she found that she loves knowing “I was a part of these individuals’ growth.”
Beyond her full-time work, Patty also helps out in residential homes on the weekends. She has kept up a six-day schedule, providing support wherever she can in programs, homes, and special events.
“I like coming to work,” she remarked, “This kind of work doesn’t feel like a job.”
Recently, Patty has started a new position at BCArc as an Outreach support. She is now able to assist individuals one-on-one via community outings.
She is excited for this new role and eager to tailor her support to each individual.
