More than 100 individuals serviced through Employment Services lost their jobs when the pandemic hit. Today, those jobs are beginning to return, slowly but steadily.
The individuals live in Berkshire County Arc group homes, or are directly from the community, explained Regan Tyer, one of four employment managers. She noted that they also work with local school districts to help high school students with disabilities transition from school to work through career assessments and training.
“Stores are starting to open, hotels, inns, and many others are slowly calling our individuals back to work,” Regan said. “Some of the positions may be gone for good, and we may have to start working with new employers,” she said.
Employment Services strives to find the best career-fit for individuals. “The right fit is the key to a successful relationship,” said Regan. “Our employers are great. They work with us to mold the job to the individual’s skills, strengths and passion. It doesn’t take long for our individuals to contribute to the culture of a workplace. We have a few who have been working for the same companies for more than 20 years.”
Employment Specialists helps individuals with their resumes, prepares them for job interviews, and arrange transportation to the job, among other things. Job Trainers visit each job weekly, or more, to make sure the experience works for both employer and employee.
“No day is the same, and the work is always rewarding,” Regan said, who has been working at BCArc for 16 years. “The individuals develop deep relationships with their workplace managers, often having lunch together or throwing birthday parties for the individuals. I know they have become a part of my family. The fact that they call me before calling mom or dad when issues arise means the world to me,” said Regan.
