What stands out most to Alex about his work at BCArc isn’t the schedule, but the people whom he now proudly calls his friends.
Since joining a BCArc group home last month as residential support staff, those connections have come naturally, and it’s not a mystery why. Anyone who meets Alex is greeted with his contagious smile and positive energy, energy he is quick to share with his residents.
Even as a newcomer to the house, Alex said he had no trouble fitting in, saying, “I love my job, it feels very personable. It’s cool getting to know their interests and hobbies. These guys are genuinely my friends at this point.”
Having worked in the medical field previously, Alex hoped for more hands-on interaction in his next job, enabling the ability to develop relationships over time. After noticing several promotional billboards, Alex decided to make the switch to BCArc.
“These guys are my favorite part of the job. I love working with them directly; it feels good to help them and make a difference.”

Alex noted that while his days vary, they typically include cooking, hanging out, attending medical appointments, shopping, and outings, depending on the residents’ agenda for the day. “As long as they’re happy, I’m happy,” he added.
“This past summer, I got to take Tommy and Billy to car shows. Those days were the most memorable by far.”
“It’s all the little things that add up; they make everything worth it.”
