Deb Mercauto is about to mark her 30th year at Berkshire County Arc. She remembers like yesterday the moment 20 years ago that led her to the house she works in now.“I was working at a home in Pittsfield, and they needed someone to manage this house. I needed some convincing because I was happy where I was and the people I was with. But Rhodora, my supervisor at the time, asked me to try it out, see how it felt, no commitment. So I did. I loved it immediately. The staff, the individuals who lived there, it felt right for me.”
Since that time staff and residents have retired, aged out, passed away, or moved. “I’m still here, I provide stability for this program. I’m not a big fan of change. People tend to stay here for a long time – staff and the individuals we support – but over the years people come and go, so I adjust and keep the program steady. The work always feels new and important.”

This is an active house, Deb says. Maria visits her boyfriend in North Adams several times a week. Melanie takes karate classes twice a week. Maria, Melanie, and Julie all go to programs during the day.

Karen recently moved out after 20 years at the house. “The stairs were becoming too much for her, so she moved to a different BCArc house. I miss her but she is happy in her new home so that feels good.”
Tina is moving into Karen’s old room very soon, and Deb feels she will be a great addition to the house. “Always something good going on here,” she said smiling. “Keeps us hopping.”
Deb earned her associates degree in human services in 1987. “I knew I wanted to help people out. I guess this was my calling.”
Deb’s husband of 18 years is retired. “I suppose I have to retire too someday, but not anytime soon. It’s scary how time goes by. For now I’d like to keep this program running smoothly for the ladies who live here. I’m lucky with this house – a great team of staff, and great residents. It’s a nice place to work.”
